This was Chibi Media’s first Holiday Matsuri. After hearing through several people how chill this con is, we decided to check it out and use the convention to premier some of the cosplays we’d been working on and scope out what the deal was.
We were not disappointed.
True to its name, Holiday Matsuri is heavily focused around Christmas/Holiday themed cosplays. This convention really allows for creativity with costuming. I took the lazy route and ordered a Santa suit for myself, but Stef was able to go a bit ham and make a reindeer kigurumi for Saturday night. Christmas trees in both the lobby and the convention hall were great for taking themed photos in cosplay, and they didn’t obstruct traffic in the areas, which was nice.
Space was aplenty most of the time. Saturday night was the only time that it was noticeably busier in the main hall. Between autograph rooms, the Dealer’s Room, Artist Alley, and hallway shots, it took a bit of navigating to get through. Still, it’s not as bad as some other conventions that take place in the area.
Usually, we complain about conjoining Artist Alley and the Dealer’s Room as one, but for this particular instance, it didn’t come off nearly as obtrusive as other conventions. This might be in part to having additional vendors in the Game Room, which was a little odd, but not entirely unwelcome. Really, it’s a rather smart move to appeal to others who might not otherwise visit the Game Room.
(As a side note, we’re absolutely ecstatic about the influx of Digimon products being sold at conventions again.)
We had a blast sitting in on the KA-ME-HA-ME-HA!! Contest Saturday afternoon with special guest Todd Haberkorn. We were able to get some footage from the competition, and it will come shortly. All of the contestants were amazing! Our congratulations to the winners! Next year, we’ll be sure to check out more events.
We at Chibi Media had a blast at Holiday Matsuri. We were able to make a lot of great connections for the website, and we look forward to Holiday Matsuri’s new location for 2016 at the Marriott World Center.
