Otakon this year was a very last minute trip for me. An opportunity became available for me to attend this year so I had taken it. This was my first time back at Otakon since 2006 and I'm really glad I went. This year was Otakon's 20th anniversary and many of the panels and events that had taken place were the big appeal for me.
We were also able to attend the TM Revolution concert which was the highlight of the convention. I had seen TMR when he appeared at Otakon 2003 and again when he appeared at New York Animefest. The concert was amazing and really impressed me. It was really awesome to see him perform again 10 years after I had first had the opportunity to see him perform.
Having not been to Otakon since 2006, I was really impressed by the number of changes that had been implemented by staff over the years. In prior years, I had felt the convention to be severely over crowded and under controlled. I was very pleased by the level of staff and security presence this year, along with the level of line control I had witnessed for events and panels. My only complaint still remains the registration line. I am not usually one to complain about heat or standing outside in line to register but this year was particularly bad. That weekend was extremely brutal for heat and humidity and the only time I ran into an issue with it, was a security member turning me away from an entrance into the Hilton, of which I was a guest at, and telling me I had to walk all the way around the block to enter the convention, even though I was only trying to enter my hotel. this would not have been a problem, had I not needed to immediately find air conditioning and water to prevent heat exhaustion. Other than that one particular personal incident, I didn't encounter any thing negative about this convention.
I was also very pleased with the Dealer's Room and Artist Alley. There were so many vendors and artists that it was almost overwhelming. In three days I still didn't get to see of the vendor tables I wanted to see.
I would really like to give Otakon another shot again in 2014. After how fun and pleasant 2013 was, I would like to have a repeat experience again.
